This has been a long time coming since being drafted by the Devils with the 20th pick in the 1990 NHL Draft. Martin Brodeur's # 30 joins Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko and Scott Niedermayer in the rafters tonight. What a career. 691 wins. 125 shutouts. 10 All-star selections. Calder Trophy winner. 5 Jennings Trophies. 4 Vezina Trophies. And most importantly, 3 Stanley Cups. He played with supreme confidence. He had his own style. The poke checks. The glove saves. Stacking the pads. He revolutionized the position with his puck-handling skills. The NHL changed the freaking rules because Marty was scoring too many goals.
I see him as one of the top 3 of all time with Jacques Plante and Patrick Roy (Hasek in a close 4th). He's a first ballot Hall of Famer for 2018. Forget how it ended, forget how he retired as a member of the Blues. Do people remember Michael Jordan for when he played for the Wizards? No. Martin Brodeur will always be remembered as a New Jersey Devil, and that's all that matters.
Also, the Devils unveiled the statue made for Brodeur last night, which I think looks really cool. It's going to look great surrounded by all the homeless people around the Prudential Center.
Cue the highlights!
When does he leave St. Louis and rightfully join the New Jersey front office? Don't hold your breath, but don't rule it out in the years to come. Thanks for 3 Stanley Cups, Marty. # 30 is back home in Jersey where it belongs.
